History of the NCCPA
Certification & Recertification Exam Reviews


This not for profit organization provides a measure of consistency and end point measurements across the 135 PA programs nationwide and 50 different state laws.

The NCCPA administers and scores examinations for graduates of physician assistant programs. Successful passage result in certification for the individual, with the right to use the designation PA-C, and physician assistant-certified.

It also sets standards for PAs to retain the certification. Currently, the certificate holder must successfully complete a recertification examination (also administered by the NCCPA) every six years.

Additionally, the PA must complete and document 50 hours a year of recognized medical education classwork and/or time, with 20 of these hours being Preapproved Category 1.

Preapproved means for a specific number of hours of Category I CME credit approved by one of the following:

• The American Academy of Physician Assistants,
• The American Osteopathic Association Council on Continuing Medical Education (AOACCME),
• American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), or the
• American Medical Association (AMA) Category I CME credit for the Physician's Recognition Award from organizations accredited by the Accreditation Council on Continuing Medical Education (ACCME)
