PAs write more than 10% of all prescriptions, and over 77% are responsible for meeting with pharmaceutical representatives - many as the primary contact. Each year, PAs write more than 250 million prescriptions, provide more than 170 million patient visits, and make hundreds of millions of OTC recommendations.

Recent News:

Department of Labor issues new regulations for implementation of the Family Medical Leave Act. The AAPA concerns were applied in the new regulations regarding the clarification of PA authority. They also allow employers to contact medical care providers for clarification of their certification of medical necessities. Military families will now be covered under FMLA. The regulations can be viewed here. ( http://a257.g.akamaitech.net/7/257/2422/01jan20081800/edocket.access.gpo.gov/2008/pdf/E8-2062.pdf). 3/08

Michigan PAs celebrate new Blue Cross Rules, allowing for the first time for PA services to be billed at 85% of the physician's fees. This ends a 20 year effort to have Blue Cross recognize PA services. (Now Michigan PAs can adopt a new goal: To Match Arkansas's recent Act 128 of 2007, part of which ensures physicians receive full reimbursement of health care services performed by a PA.) 12/07

What are the seven ideal physician behaviors, according to patients? Confident, empathetic, humane, personal, forthright, respectful and through. (Patients' Perspectives on Ideal Physician Behaviors, J Med Lic and Dis 2007 93(4):24-27.)

It is the patient who carries the burden of illness, but the compassionate physician
shares that burden, lifting
it when possible and lightening it when that is all that can
be done This sharing of the burden has always been the hallmark of the medical profession.

- Richard Hollis, M.D.

Medical providers (and the public) can now check National Practitioner Database information here.
